![]() ![]() Yes, we realize the word “flushable” is in the title, but, sadly, that’s not an accurate description of this product. Here are some of the things people commonly put down their drains that should not go in your household plumbing. If you’re going to do that, it’s important to understand more about your pipes. The obvious solution is to change your habits and be vigilant about what does - and doesn’t - go down your drain. But, if you’re like most people, you’ve gotten into the habit of using drains to dispose of any number of household items. Your drain and the plumbing system running through your house are designed to process liquids. Isn’t it there for me to wash things into it?” Right now you might be thinking, “But it’s a drain. And eventually, those things are going to build up until a clog forms. Whether you realize it or not, you’ve likely been subjecting your plumbing to all sorts of foreign objects and things that don’t belong down there. The bad news is that by the time one of your pipes get to this point, the problem has likely been building up for months, or maybe even years. If you just leave it alone, eventually it will stop draining altogether, and that will indicate that the clog has blocked a portion of the entire pipe. First, you’ll notice that water is draining slower than usual, whether it’s your tub or a kitchen or bathroom sink. When it comes to identifying a problem with your plumbing, the good news is that it’s generally easy to spot. You may have to change a few habits or get your hands a little dirty, but putting more time and attention into your home’s drains may save you a lot of money down the road. While you can’t typically see most of your home’s plumbing system, you can easily protect it against clogs and corrosion by being vigilant about what goes down the drain and acting quickly when you start to notice a problem. And that failure is going to cost you big time. Abusing your home’s plumbing system by allowing it to come into contact with certain items and materials may eventually lead to a failure in your home’s plumbing system. But, did you know that those little lapses in judgment could eventually cost you big? We’ve all done things like this many, many times - typically without giving it a second thought. Or maybe you emptied your kitty litter into the toilet and flushed it. You painted a bookcase and rinsed the paintbrush in your bathroom sink. Essentially Bellcate students will continue to research, develop and expand their products with the end goal of developing a small startup business. You cooked dinner and tossed the scraps down the kitchen sink to let the garbage disposal work its magic. This pilot program has already demonstrated tremendous buy in from students and significant value in meeting the continuum of needs within our community. This lab also works collaboratively with our oil chemistry classes where students are harvesting, distilling and blending our own essential oils. ![]() ![]() Essentially Bellcate Lab students also package, label and distribute sensory products to their peers and families that allows them to play a role in the health of our larger community. Students are empowered when they learn, recognize, create and use tools that support their own regulation and wellness. The products provide sensory input that aligns with regulation needs through smell, taste and touch senses. Students learn to identify and utilize essential oils in crafting products to support effective self-regulation. This psycho-education plays a critical role in students developing greater self-awareness about the quality of their own dis regulation when in distress and how to address it. In this class, students develop products in our lab to meet the self-regulation needs of Calming, Alerting and Grounding (essential oil toothpicks, putty, sprayers, inhalers, lollipops, cough drops, etc) The Essentially Bellcate lab is a great compliment to the self-regulation strategies that students are learning in Brain Science. Essentially Bellcate is a new course offering taught by Kara Kitchen-Glodgett.
